Red Carpet inspiration from the MOBOs

Last night Glasgow played host to the 16th (yes 16th!) annual MOBO awards, hosted by US singer Jason Derulo and singer and Strictly judge Aleesha Dixon. The evening saw models, actors and a whole host of guests from the music industry, showing that the MOBOs is now firmly up there as a big music award show.

The stars turned it up on the red carpet and I picked my four favourite looks of the evening and used them to inspire high street looks that would be perfect for our big event on 22nd October.

Jourdan Dunn

Model Jourdan was definitely one of the best dressed of the night in her stunning embellished Roberto Cavalli gown. Embellished dresses are a great way to add instant glam and opting for a nude tone like Jourdan keeps the look classy and chic. Keep accessories to a minimum and opt for simple hair and make up and let the dress do the talking.

Host Jason Derulo looked sharp on the red carpet, keeping the traditional monochrome look fresh by adding a velvet jacket (he must read our blog). There’s a lot to be said for a traditional black tie look, the key is to add your own twist.

Britain’s Next Top Model Winner is Mix-d:

As a girl who loves fashion, how could I not be hooked by ‘Britain and Ireland’s Next Top Model’ (formerly Britain’s Next Top Model or BNTM for those in the know)? I have watched every single series of the show and I have been addicted from the start. Every year I fall in fashion love with one of the girls and hope that my favourite will win.

This year one girl totally stood out from the other finalists, a gorgeous mixed race girl with red hair, freckles and a body to die for. ‘Wow’ was my first impression of 20 year old Jade Thompson, who was spotted at the BINTM live show last October and encouraged to apply this year. And the judges clearly felt the same as Jade was chosen for the final thirteen girls to take part in the show and eventually crowned her this year’s winner.

But Jade hasn’t always felt so confident about her appearance, and this week told The Manchester Evening News about how she spent years wishing she didn’t look so different as she was taunted for unusual looks. She went through the same experience as a lot of mixed race people do, with the familiar response - ‘what are you’?

Those who have followed Jade’s journey on BINTM will be in no doubt now as to what she is, with the looks that she was taunted for winning her the coveted prize, and a modelling contact with a top London agency. This mix-d:face is going places, paving the way for more mixed race models and showing that being different can be a good thing.

BBC Two Mixes Things Up this Autumn

Whilst Mix-d: Face is breaking new ground in the fashion world, the BBC is starting it’s Mixed Race Britain season. This season of original new programming aims to tell the often untold story of Britain’s mixed race population, from the past up to the present day. With a mix of drama and documentaries, the BBC hopes to give a snapshot of how the mixed race population of Britain has helped to shape it’s social and cultural landscape.

“This is not just a season for mixed race people, or those in a mixed race relationship. It’s BBC Two’s role to reflect contemporary society and the story of mixed-race Britain is a valuable exploration into the way we live now. I hope our audience will find it fresh and inspiring.” Janice Hadlow, Controller of BBC Two

Here are some of just some the programmes you can look forward to seeing…

Shirley

Starring Ruth Negga (Misfits, Criminal Justice, Five Daughters) Shirley dramatises the life of singer (and national treasure) Dame Shirley Bassey. From her beginnings as one of eight children in a poor mixed-race family, to the diva we know and love today, the drama follows the ups and downs of her professional and personal life.

Shirley airs this Thursday, 21:00 – BBC Two

Mixed Britannia

Mixed Britannia is a three-part series which joins presenter George Alagiah as he looks at the untold story of the British mixed race community through the decades. The series focuses on how mixed race relationships and their resulting children have been viewed during various times in history and how mixed race families have dealt with the prejudice that surrounds them.

Mixed Britannia airs Thursday 6th October – BBC Two

How the World got Mixed Up

How the World got Mixed Up explores attitudes towards race mixing throughout history and in contemporary society. It looks at the stigma faced by many mixed race couples and the complex history of mixed race relationships.

We Have Our First Catwalk Success at London Fashion Week.

Graham Scaife, the male winner of Mix-d: Face 2010 modelled Christopher Shannon’s Spring / Summer 2012 collection at the closing show of London Fashion week.

Less than one year ago he attended our drop-in scouting day at Harvey Nichols, Manchester. Just 15 at the time, he wasn’t entirely sure if this was the direction he should take but we are glad he did.

He went on the win first prize as Mix-d: Face representative for 2010 and a 12 month modelling contract with Boss models.

Since then he has attracted a lot of positive attention in the fashion industry and is carving out a bright future for himself.
