Not over-celebrating nor over-looking.
Mix-d Face 2010 broke new ground. It was the first professional mixed race model contest in the UK. And whilst it broke this new ground, it also stretched our own comfort zones. It took Mix-d: as an organisation into new territories.
We were asked many times if it was ethical. Some people were asking if it drew more attention to something that was best not put under a spotlight. To be honest, although we felt reasonably confident, we couldn’t be 100% sure ourselves until we tried it.
The night itself – 30 October 2010 – answered all the questions. The event proceeded with elegance and dignity. Twenty incredible young people paced out a new territory for mixed heritage. No-one ran, no-one stumbled. It’s happening again this year.
Last year all the money left over from the event’s direct costs went into our Education Pack, helping professionals to develop constructive dialogues with young people around mixed race.
This year, the fund raising event will help develop our Parenting Pack, sharing guidance and support. Join us on Mix-d Face 2011 for a great night.. The message is still as important this year as it was last year.

Mix-d: and Metis De France presenting mixed-race manifesto at European Commission in, May 2011.
MANCHESTER MIXED-RACE ORGANISATION ADVISE EUROPEAN COMMISSION - Press Release
Mix-d:, the group which tackles issues around mixed race, is going to Brussels to help develop a new agenda for the Europe’s fastest growing ethic group.
The social enterprise began six years ago by advising inner-city Manchester schools on developing policies and practices for understanding and accommodating mixed race cultures.
By the end of 2010 Mix-d had worked in local authorities all across the UK and had delivered the UK’s first professionally-sponsored mixed race model contest at The Monastery.
Mix-d is now working with researchers in the U.S. and, through a collaboration with a Metis de France, a mixed race group in Paris, has now been invited to help develop European mixed race policy.
Metis de France have long been campaigning for direct engagement with Europe and Mix-d is delighted to be included in their delegation.
Bradley Lincoln, Mix-d:‘s founder, says, “We feel this invitation to meet with the EU is a validation of all the hard work to make the mixed-race debate visible and constructive.”
Mix-d: will be presenting to the European Commissioners in May with a detailed manifesto highlighting the need for work in the areas of education, health, community engagement, fairness and representation.
Introducing a new member to the Mix-d: team . We are proud to Welcome Nikki Lennon on board as our official fashion blogger for Mix-d: face 2011.
Blog by Nikki Lennon.
I have been a fashion blogger since May 2010, and started my site up on my own just out of my love (some would say obsession!) with fashion. I wanted my own creative outlet and to be able to get my voice out there.
One of the things I have loved about blogging is that it has opened up the doors for me to work with some exciting people. It is through blogging that I have become involved in Mix-d: as an organisation and I am really excited to be on board with Mix-d: Face 2011!
I come from a Mixed Race background so of course what Mix-d: are doing is important to me. In the same way in which I got my voice out there by blogging, Mix-d: are working hard to give a voice to Mixed Race people.
I am proud to be part of that voice and the fact that I can use what I love to get involved is just amazing.
